Hello, fellow pet parents and dog lovers!

It's Sierra, one of Halo Shih Tzus, ready to share some pawsome tips and tricks to make sure your furry friends have a tail-wagging good time this summer.

Whether it's going on adventures, playing in the sprinkler, or simply lounging together in the shade, summer is a great time to bond with your dog. Here are my tips to safely enjoy the summer heat!

  1. Hydration Station: Just like us, dogs need plenty of water, especially when it's hot outside. Make sure to keep their water bowl filled with fresh, cool water at all times, whether you're at home or on the go. If you're out for a walk or at the park, bring along a travel water bottle of water to keep your pup hydrated.

  2. Beat the Heat: Dogs can easily overheat, so it's crucial to avoid exercising or walking them during the hottest parts of the day. Early mornings or late evenings are the best times for walks when the temperatures are cooler. If it's too hot for you to walk barefoot on the pavement, it's too hot for your pup's paws too!

  3. Chill Out Zones: Create shady spots in your yard with a canopy or umbrella where your dog can relax away from direct sunlight.  A cooling mat can be used outdoors or indoors. If your pup prefers indoors, ensure there's a cool, well-ventilated area for them to retreat to. Consider using a fan or air conditioning to keep the indoor temperature comfortable.

  4. Hot Cars are a No-go: This one's a biggie! Even with the windows cracked, cars can quickly become ovens in the summer heat, putting your dog at risk of heatstroke or worse. If you can't take your pup inside with you, it's best to leave them at home.

  5. Pool Parties: If your dog loves water, consider setting up a kiddie pool in the yard for them to splash around in. A sprinkler mat is also a fun and safe way for them to cool off while getting some exercise.

  6. Safety first on the water: Even if your pup can swim, consider buying a lifejacket to keep them safe on (or even near) the water. Pay attention to sizing so you get the right fit for your dog.

  7. Paw Protection: Hot pavement and sand can burn your dog's paw pads. Before heading out for a walk, test the ground with your hand—if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Use dog booties or paw wax to protect their paws if you must walk them on hot surfaces.

  8. Watch for Critters: Summer brings out all sorts of insects and critters that can pose a danger to your pup—from bees and wasps to ticks and fleas. Keep an eye out for signs of insect bites or ticks and use appropriate preventatives as recommended by your vet.

  9. Keep 'Em Groomed: Regular grooming helps keep your dog's coat healthy and free of mats, which can trap heat close to the skin. However, avoid shaving your dog's coat too short as it can leave them susceptible to sunburn.

I hope you found my tips paw-sitively helpful in keeping your pup summer safe.  Remember, with a little preparation and a whole lot of puppy love, you can ensure your furry friend stays cool as a cucumber during these dog days of summer.

Woof woof for now!

Sierra
